I'm working on a project so i would like to know how long it would take to revolutionize the hydrogen powered carsMany things need to happen before this can occur.
1) Although hydrogen is abundant in the extreme in the form of water, dissociating it from oxygen in commercial quantities is extremely energy intensive. In fact, it is energy negative, that is, it takes much more energy to extract and liquify the hydrogen than the energy obtained by it's combution. So we would be burning coal and oil to produce hydrogen which leads to....
2)Non-automotive sources of energy must be developed to permit the hydrogen to be produced economically
3)Infrastructure must be created and deployed to provide the hydrogen to the automobiles. To be commercially viable hydrogen must be transported and stored as a liquid. A standard gaseous cylinder contains about 200 cu. ft. of hydrogen, which sounds like a lot, but would probably get you about 20 miles of driving.
4) The Hindenburg factor - Surprisingly, hydrogen is a very safe fuel. It's low molecular weight causes it to rise very rapidly. Thus in an accident, the hydrogen would go straight up, unlike liquid fuels which fall to the ground and form burning puddles. Also, hydrogen burns with a pale blue flame. That may not mean much to most people, but it means that no infrared radiation is produced when it burns. That means that in order to be burned by hydrogen, you would have to be physically in the flame, unlike current fuels, which can burn you from a considerable distance due to the infrared radiation their combustion produces.
But people keep coming back to the Hindenburg accident, which, it has been shown, was really caused by the dopant used on the exterior surface of the airship.
So my personal conclusion is that hydrogen cars as standard vehicle for everyone are at least 25-40 years away. It may never happen at all.about a hundred yrs,It'll never happen. And if the other guy knew what he was talking about, then he would know that gasoline doesn't burn. it's the fumes that burn. Also, the fumes rise straight up (like hydrogen) so that point is moot.
Electric cars are lightyears ahead of hydrogen cars. But even those won't be around any time soon. The infrastructure would have to completely change to support hydrogen and no one will let that happen. Ethynol is the way to go if they could build an infrastructure for it. Not a lot has to change if you use ethynol.Before everyone can have a hydrogen car, they need to become affordable for everyone. I don't know how long that will take, but I doubt it will be anytime soon.That will not occur till after World War Three has ended. At that time, when the world has destroyed itself because of the greed for money which comes from oil, at that time hydrogen cars will come into place. There is more hydrogen on the planet than we could use in a billion years. This is well known, and quite possible to produce. But it will not be done as long as the oil based economy in which we live today is completely destroyed. God help us. We are doomed.
